When you bring a pet into your home, it becomes part of your family. But did you know that having pets can also improve your health?
1. Less Stress
Multiple studies have found that pets have positive physical effects on their human family members. One study at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a spouse, family member, or close friend was nearby. Another study found that having a pet has the potential to lower blood pressure, especially in hypertensive or high-risk patients.
2. Better Mood
Having a pet as part of your family means that whenever you come home, there’s going to be someone there who’s extremely excited to see you. So even if you’ve had a tough day, you will immediately get all kinds of affection and positive attention from your pet.
3. Increased Exercise
Whether it’s going outside with your dog or just running around the house with your cat, having a pet gives you a reason to be active on a regular basis. Even though it can be easy to blow off going to the gym when you aren’t in the mood, the same isn’t true for a pet that’s eagerly looking at you to play.
4. Helpful Structure
Regardless of the size of your household, it’s easy for things to get chaotic from time to time. One of the great things about having a pet as a family member is they do best with a consistent structure. This includes everything from when they eat their pet food to getting exercise during playtime. By providing your pet with a consistent regimen, you’ll find that the rest of your family benefits as well.
